About Me

My photo
For as long as I can remember, I have had a wild relationship with food. From binge eating to numb the pain to getting obsessive about healthy eating. This is me trying to figure out how to live with food and not act insane while doing it. Should be fun!

El Torrito Taco & BBQ

Two things I know for sure: Food tastes good. And talking about food feels even better. Since I write for a living and I love all things culinary, I thought why not start a food blog! I decided to name my blog Hidden Morsels because I like the idea of finding restaurants that are off the beaten path but that deliver the real gastric goods.

My first official blog post is on El Torrito Taco & BBQ. Usually camped out in front of the Manitoba Hydro building on Portage Avenue, this Mexican food truck is just across the street from my office. How convenient!

Located almost at the corner of Portage and Carlton in front of the Hydro Building

The menu isn't complicated. You can get beef, chicken or tempura cod tacos or the chorizo sausage. I've had the tacos in the past, and while I enjoyed them, the chorizo sausage is the definite showstopper. I literally had dreams about it after our first encounter. Chorizo, stop haunting my dreams....

So what makes this Spanish sausage so dreamy, you ask? The chorizo is served in what I can only describe as a Mexican hot dog. The sausage, which has the most wonderful soft texture on the inside and flamed-kissed crunch on the outside, is sliced in two and is served on a pillow-soft white bun. Also in the chorizo hot dog party is fresh tomatoes, onions, cilantro and salsa verde. Essentially a flavour overload... but in a good way.

Hello dreamboat...

The chorizo is $5.00. Add a canned drink for an extra $1.50. If you are feeling really adventurous, you can get the El Grande which consists of 3 tacos of your choice (it can be a mixture of beef and chicken tacos), the chorizo and a canned drink for $10. Sweet deal!

I give the El Torrito chorizo 4.5 out of 5 mmm's. I'd give them five but I think all things deserve a little wiggle room to become even more perfect. Like that's even possible.

Seeing as I do a lot of travelling in the summer in the ol' motorhome, I will have some rural grub to share with you too. I'm thinking JT's Store & Diner in Blumenort. Maybe Grumpy Baba's in Anola? Stay tuned!
